Birgitta Jonsdottir - Financial & Political Update from Iceland

Birgitta Jonsdottir is a member of the Althing, the Icelandic parliament. Her district is the Reykjavík South Constituency. She was elected to the Icelandic parliament in April 2009 on behalf of a movement aiming for democratic reform beyond party politics of left and right, called "The Movement." Birgitta is a poet and has been an activist and a spokesperson for various groups, such as Wikileaks and Saving Iceland. She also acts as a spokeswoman for the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative. She returns to discuss the misconceptions surrounding the alleged debt forgiveness in Iceland. We'll address truth vs. rumor regarding the economy and democracy in Iceland. Ever since the Icesave dispute in 2008, Iceland's economy has been in shambles. In the recent year or so, it has somewhat managed to get back on its feet. Jonsdottir says Iceland's aspirations of joining the EU are low considering the shape the Eurozone is in. Birgitta argues that although some things have improved in Iceland, many from the "Icelandic financial mafia" are still in high corporate and political positions in Iceland. We also discuss what is true when it comes to how the citizens of Iceland participated in writing their new constitution, online.

Matt Taibbi: Libor Rate-Fixing Scandal "Biggest Insider Trading You Could Ever Imagine"

Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi joins us to discuss the pattern of systemic corruption by 16 banks accused of rigging a key global interest rate used in contracts worth trillions of dollars. The London Interbank Offered Rate, known as Libor, is the average interest rate at which banks can borrow from each other. Some analysts say it defines the cost of money. Barclays was recently fined $453 million for rigging Libor, and a number of other banks are under investigation. "Ordinary people actually suffered when Libor was manipulated downward, mainly because local governments, municipal governments tended to lose money," Taibbi says. "Even the tiniest manipulation downward, when you’re talking about a thing of this scale, would result in tens of trillions of dollars of losses. ... The banks weren’t doing this just to make themselves look healthier, they were also doing this just to make money. They were trading against this information in what essentially was the biggest kind of insider trading you could possibly imagine." Taibbi is author of the book "Griftopia: A Story of Bankers, Politicians, and the Most Audacious Power Grab in American History."

"The top 400 people own more wealth now than the bottom 185 million Americans taken together. That is a medieval structure

Alperovitz is the author of, "America Beyond Capitalism: Reclaiming Our Wealth, Our Liberty, and Our Democracy." In his remarks, Alperovitz stressed the importance of third-party politics to challenge a corporate-run society. "Systems in history are defined above all by who controls the wealth," Alperovitz says. "The top 400 people own more wealth now than the bottom 185 million Americans taken together. That is a medieval structure."

ISDA Panel to Meet Today to Decide If Greece Swap Constitutes Credit Event

The International Swaps and Derivatives Association said its determinations committee will meet today to consider a “potential credit event” relating to Greece.

The committee will meet at 1 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time to determine whether a credit event has occurred, according to a statement posted on ISDA’s website today. Greece’s government said it reached its target in the biggest sovereign restructuring in history, with a 95.7 percent participation rate among investors after it received approval to activate collective action clauses.

Bondholders tendered 152 billion euros ($201 billion) of Greek-law bonds, or 85.8 percent, after the government offered to swap their holdings for new securities under the debt exchange. Twenty billion euros of foreign-law bonds were also tendered, according to an e-mailed statement from the Greek Finance Ministry. Greece aimed to cut its 206 billion euros of eligible debt by about 100 billion euros. ISDA said last week that credit-default swaps on Greek bonds hadn’t been triggered by the European Central Bank’s exchange of Greek bonds for new securities exempt from losses taken by private investors. Under ISDA rules the use of collective action clauses should trigger the swaps.

The volume of contracts on Greece has tumbled, with the net amount of debt protected representing less than one percent of the nation’s bonds and loans outstanding. Swaps on Greece now cover $3.16 billion, down from about $5.56 billion a year ago, according to the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. That compares with contracts covering $22.7 billion of Italian government debt and $22.5 billion of France’s debt.

Considering that re-hypothecation may have increased the financial footprint of Eurozone bonds by at least four fold then a Eurozone sovereign default could be apocalyptic.

Ross Ashcroft - Four Horsemen

The modern day Four Horsemen continue to ride roughshod over the people who can least afford it. Crises are converging when governments, religion and mainstream economists have stalled. 23 international thinkers come together and break their silence about how the world really works and why there is still hope in re-establishing a moral and just society. Four Horsemen is free from mainstream media propaganda, doesn't bash bankers, criticize politicians or get involved in conspiracy theories. The film ignites the debate about how we usher a new economic paradigm into the world which, globally, would dramatically improve the quality of life for billions. Written by Anonymous (IMDB)

Greek Junk: Condemned to slow death

Greece has just been thrust further into junk status by the Fitch credit rating agency, which is predicting a Greek default very soon. That as the government in Athens rushes through its most punishing package of cuts yet. They're a precondition for the next 130 billion Euro bailout - which will be handed over once Athens yields to the last of the EU's demands. But unions, weary of years of austerity, are already mobilising for new rallies. Today and tomorrow - it's expected that thousands will surround the Greek Parliament. For more on what they may, or may not achieve, RT talks to George Katrougalos, lawyer and professor of constitutional law, live from Athens.

Greek bailout not the rescue it seems

Why is this called a Greek bailout when in fact its a handout to the foregin banks?

To start with, the bailout is not for Greece, but for German, French and other foreign banks who willfully abandoned due diligence to buy more Greek debt than any financial analyst would have thought the country could sustain.

The 130 billion euros ($171.9 billion) in aid agreed to by Europe’s finance ministers in their marathon session will go into a managed account to make sure it goes directly to Greece’s creditors when their bonds fall due.
Read
MarketWatch’s full coverage of the Greek deal.

The agreement was made possible when the Greek Parliament a week earlier approved a package of draconian austerity measures, which they, as well as the European finance ministers who insisted on it, know they will never be able to deliver.

Austerity Anger: Cops lash out at cuts protests in Spain

The streets of Spanish cities become a battlefield as tens of thousands of schoolchildren and students have been protesting against education cuts. The demonstrations turned violent earlier this week in the city of Valencia where 17 people were injured in what's been called a 'heavy-handed repression' of the rally. Five days of protests have been sparked by the latest budget cuts implemented to meet tough EU deficit targets.

Financial Fascism? 'Greeks should revolt against debt slavery!'

It's been a tough night in Brussels where Eurozone ministers have reached a deal on a second bailout for Greece. It took them several hours to agree on the one-hundred-and-thirty-billion euro cash injection, expected to save the country from default. Earlier the Greek Parliament went through a storm of public outrage and several internal conflicts to approve the austerity measures demanded by international creditors.
